Holidays in Tuscany: Pisa and the Tower

Pisa is a city of art in Italy, with an important past of the Maritime Republic.

In 1406 it was conquered by Florence by the Medici family to whom we owe the creation of the University Study and Piazza dei Cavalieri. In 1860 it was annexed to the Kingdom of Italy in 1944 and was the victim of air strikes that have changed beyond repair the urban fabric.

The city’s most important that we find in the Tuscan city of Pisa is the Piazza del Duomo or Campo dei Miracoli.

Within the Piazza dei Miracoli is the Duomo, the Baptistery and the Campanile.

The Cathedral was begun in 1064 and completed in 1200 by Buscheto approximately Rainald, the facade is characterized by blind Achates surmounted by four rows of loggias dgradanti adorned with sculptures. The dome is placed over the plot of the aisles. The colors and architecture of the Cathedral make it a wonderful example of unity stlilistica.

The construction of the Baptistery began around 1152 and ended in about 1300. The Baptistery of Pisa is a Romanesque building with a circular plan of rare beauty. The exterior is completely surrounded by arches and loggias decorated in Gothic style, surmounted by eight-sided dome.

The Campanile is widely known as the Tower of Pisa or Leaning Tower.

Work on the construction of the Tower of Pisa began in 1173, shortly after they were stopped because of land subsidence to be taken up later and completed in 1300. The monument is completely covered with marble bianco.La tower is about 58 meters and weighs about 14,500 tons. The steps to radiate towards the highest point of the tower are a total of 293. Its inclination is 55 degrees today, falling by 2.3 meters below the floor of the foundation. The operations performed in recent years have reduced the slope of the Pisa tower of about 47 cm, and its stability should be Harbour view until 2100, and we all hope so!

The identity of the architect who has designed the building, it is still mystery. It is assumed that the original work is attributed to Bonanno Pisano, but the current view of historians attribute the style of decorations Biduino.

The Tower of Pisa and all the Piazza dei Miracoli is one of the most important monuments in Italy and worldwide, and its appeal is due not only to architecture but to the magical balancing act born of a simple architectural error!
